No one loves like a mother. Watch a Mom with her newborn in her arms, and you learn a lesson in tenderness. Watch her hover near her wobbly toddler and you’ll learn about protectiveness. Make a disparaging remark about her teenage son’s choice of clothes or hairstyle, and you’ll learn about fierce loyalty. And criticize her grandchildren…well that is treading on very dangerous ground. The Bible understands such fierce motherly love, at one point comparing enraged battle-ready warriors to a mother bear robbed of her cubs (2 Samuel 17:8). No, no one loves like a mother.
No one? Yes, there is one who loves even more, and even better. The apostle Paul tells us that the love of Christ is unfathomable (Ephesians 3: 17 – 20). The perfect son of God paid the ultimate price for us—his life. Those who belong to him are rooted and grounded in this very love. It takes a lifetime of devotion and prayer to begin to understand the magnitude, the width and length, the height and depth of such love.
Yes, a mother’s love can make a big difference in this life. Christ’s love for you and me makes a difference for all eternity.
